Last year, SM Entertainment announced that they would be producing a Korean drama adaptation, ‘To the Beautiful You’, off the insanely popular Japanese comic, ‘Hana Kimi‘.
Although several names have been on and off the potential cast list, rumors started circulating last month…

♥ 生日快乐, Happy birthday, 생일 축하 ♥
Lilted vowels, legs that go on forever and ever. Surprising everyone with yet another Super Mario, cooing at the cutest puppies. Sometimes the need for a little coordination fine tuning, easy arms that wrap around shoulders and hands that are at least as expressive as the words that so often are spiced with laughter. A smile that tugs the other corner of his mouth higher than the other, kisses a crease to his nose and turns eyes into crescents.
It’s someone’s birthday today. It’s so difficult to believe that it has already been four years, since the first time he made his face known as a member of Super Junior, the band of brothers. There may be arguments against this, and it’s true that he introduces himself with an ‘M’, but the connection is still there.
Zhou Mi, the social butterfly, the one who is half a head taller than everyone around him – well, until as of lately, when he was casted for a new drama. Year 2012 has brought some new opportunities, and I couldn’t be prouder. It’s not that I would have anything to do with that budding success, but even just being able to witness it makes me so proud of him, happy for him. As an actor, he may be new to the world of dramas, having only acted once before. But the enthusiasm and interest to learn more, do more, is one of the many things that I’ve learned to admire in him.
Not having any regrets in his youth is his goal, he says. And day after day, he’s getting closer to that goal, he says. Quite a chunk of that time, he has spent in front of hundreds, sometimes thousands of people, and sang with everything’s he’s got. First just as Zhou Mi, later on as Super Junior M’s Zhou Mi, and seemingly very proud of it. There’s something about the way he treats this group, how it’s another kind of a family, but still something that needs to be perfect. Sometimes, I wish I could tell him to sit down and stop, tell him that they don’t need to be perfect. They are human beings too, and everyone is prone to make mistakes one way or another. But what would it be worth, if one doesn’t strive for the best, the ultimatum? It’s a goal that motivates, and brings out better results, even with the risk of disappointment and hurt. Another thing that has made me realize how serious he is about his dreams is this. The sheer will and hard work to do your best, be the best, and being able to be proud of what you have achieved as a group. If that is not inspiring, then I don’t know what is.
Still, it’s the same perfectionism that makes me worry so often about him. He says ‘you must learn to walk before you can run’, and there is nothing truer than this. But he already knows how to run. Sometimes, one should take a breath and take care of themselves before starting to run again, not stop only when your legs give out under you. That is exactly the mindset that I respect so much, but also worry about, because it’s bound to drive one to their limits. And Zhou Mi keeps pushing those limits, even when others tell him to stop. I wish that this year, you would have time to take care of yourself properly, get your vocal cords healed properly this time. We’ll see what the future brings us.
My heart jumped from joy, when he revealed that he’s got time enough to do something else than mere singing, that he’s made the decision to write a book. Trying out new things, spreading your wings even wider, there is not really an emotion that would properly describe the way I feel. Joy doesn’t seem to cover it. I’m thrilled to see the final product, and at the same time, I couldn’t be more happy for him, that he gets to create something new and pour his own thoughts and opinions of things that make him happy, into something that shows so much diversity as an artist. Not just an entertainer, but a person who strives to create and share, tell and motivate. At first, he said the book would be about fashion, later on he mentioned traveling. Whichever it’s going to be – or a mix of both? – I can’t wait.
Yet still, he’s chasing after that dream of singing his heart out. From a boy, who ignored his homework to practice, attending as many competitions as his age allowed (and sometimes going a bit around the rules, even when the age limit would have required him to be older) – to the man, who is capable of bringing chills to the entire audience just with the sound of his voice. There are people, who refuse to recognize his talents - but to those, who have allowed him in their hearts, he has proved himself to be more than anyone would have been even capable of expecting.
I hope this year brings you only the brightest smiles on your face. I hope that this year, you can do more, be more than what anyone has ever expected. I hope that this year, you can sing in front of thousands of people, all who love and cherish what you have and who you are. I hope that this year, you will have a chance to rest and say ‘no, I’d rather sleep today’, and go back to bed. I hope that this year, you can do what you want the most, and still have a chance to change your mind. I hope that this year, you can meet old and new people, and enjoy everything that will come.
Happy26th18th birthday, Zhou Mi! There really are no words to describe all the things that I feel and want to say, but maybe sometimes, that isn’t required. I love you ♥
